Everyone wants to live a clean, green, ecologically responsible life, but not all of us have the ability to make, big, grand gestures toward the environment. That takes time, money, and effort that a lot of us just don’t have access to, especially during the holidays. Fortunately, for those who are serious about maintaining their green efforts with out-of-town visitors, there are all kinds of little tweaks we can make to save energy and resources. If you’re looking for a place to get started, these three changes are a good place to start.
#1: Install a High-Efficiency Shower-head
We don’t always think about how much water we use, and the sheer amount of energy it takes to heat that water. If you have extra guests staying with you, a better approach is to install a high-efficiency shower-head. These shower-heads use less water, and according to HGTV they can save 1,000 pounds of carbon, and 3,000 gallons of water every year.
#2: Avoid Using Your Electric Oven Whenever Possible
An electric oven uses a lot of juice, and that produces a lot of carbon when making large meals for bigger groups. Alternative cooking devices, like a microwave, a toaster oven, or even a slow cooker use less power, and produce significantly less carbon.
#3: Load Your Freezer and Your Washer
When your freezer is empty, it has to work harder to keep everything cold. When your washing machine is empty, it uses more water and power to wash what little is in there. You’ll save a lot more energy, and be more efficient, if you make sure you keep your fridge full with leftovers and your washer and dryer as full as you can.
