Be An Eco-Friendly Pet Owner

We all love our pets, but sometimes they generate almost as big a carbon footprint as we do. So if you’re looking for a way to live a cleaner, greener life, it might be a good idea to ask what you and your pets can do differently. To get you started, here are 5 simple suggestions.

#1: Switch to Biodegradable Bags

Most of us don’t teach our pets to use the toilet, so we need to clean up after them. However, instead of using plastic bags, try using biodegradable bags. They’ll keep the smell in until you can toss the waste out, and then they’ll decompose along with the waste they’re holding.

#2: Adopt Your Pet

While there might be a lot of puppies in the window, going to the local animal shelter to adopt a pet has a far-reaching effect on the environment. The more people who adopt, the less demand there is for breeding. That means more animals with no homes are taken care of, and it means there are fewer puppy mills, and fewer resources being spent on purebred and boutique dogs. This leads to serious savings for the environment, and for our resources, and you can take a small step to make that happen while bringing a new friend into your life.

#3: Cut Out Paper Waste

Paper plates and paper towels are common tools we use as pet owners… but that waste adds up of your furry friend’s lifetime. Instead of putting treats or scraps onto paper plates, use a designated pet plate. Instead of paper towels, use rags to wipe up messes. It might feel like a small change, but it has a big impact.

#4: Donate When You Can

When your clothes get too small, do you just chuck it in the trash? Or do you try to donate it to a charity first? Chances are it’s the latter, and you can do the same thing with your pet’s old collars, toys, and accessories. Making donations to charities, and to your local shelter, can do a lot of good, and it ensures you’re keeping useful items out of landfills.

#5: Buy in Bulk

Buying in bulk, particularly when it’s for items like food or litter, can save you money in addition to being ecologically sound decisions. Bulk buying means less packaging to deal with, and less waste generated, in addition to getting you better value for your money.
