Decorative light sources add a vibrant atmosphere to your interior decor. They can also serve a practical purpose as a soft night light. Using LED candles, you can make your own DIY lanterns using all sorts of reusable materials. Here are three of Western National‘s favorite ideas.
1. Aluminum Cans
Aluminum cans make very versatile lanterns. You can make a single lantern or you can string them together to make beautiful string lights. Cans are easy to paint, so you can make them as colorful as you like. You can also poke holes to make a creative design and let the light shine through.
2. Glass Bottles or Jars
If you’re looking for a transparent lantern option, glass bottles or jars are perfect. You can paint a design on the front and make it as simple or as elaborate as you like. If you’d rather create more of an abstract, textured design, you can glue tissue paper to the front for a gorgeous colorful look. You can even create a wire handle for the bottle or jar to create a hanging lantern and use the glass jar as-is.
If you’d like to try your hand at some origami, you can turn old papers into a fancy new lantern. Make a very small lantern out of a single sheet or pair multiple origami pieces together to create one large lantern. Since you can scale the project to be as large or as small as you’d like, you can either use it to spend a couple of minutes or fill a nice weekend afternoon.
Arts and crafts projects like these DIY lanterns are a great way to recycle old materials and take a step towards a greener lifestyle.
