3 Eco-Friendly Choices You Can Make When Going Out

There are dozens of eco-friendly choices you can make when you’re at home, but what do you do when you go out? After all, you’re still leaving a carbon footprint just because you’re not in your apartment. However, a little forethought goes a long way toward making cleaner, greener decisions.

Tip #1: Eat More Salad

If you’re going out for dinner with friends, consider not just what you’re eating, but what it takes to make your meal. Salads and other cold dishes don’t use the same resources to prepare, and they have the added advantage that they’re good for your waistline. Don’t feel you need to cut out cheeseburgers entirely, but try to be conscious of how much goes into preparing your meal. Also, if you want bonus points here, try to patronize establishments that buy locally, thereby cutting the costs for transporting their food and saving even more resources.

Tip #2: Use Public Transportation

While walking is the best way to get somewhere, that’s not always a feasible option in today’s day and age. One of the next best eco-friendly choices you can make is to take public transportation wherever you’re going. Not only is it better on the environment, but it will save you the costs of gas, as well as parking if you happen to be meeting up in the city. If you live in an area without a robust public transportation system, though, carpooling is also a good way to cut your emissions while still enjoying your night out.

Tip #3: Cut Down On Your Disposables

When we go out, we often don’t think about our behavior or the impact our choices have. Taking a moment to make specific decisions, though, can have a long-term impact. For example, if you’re not going to drink that glass of water, tell your waiter not to give it to you. If you’re not going to use that straw (or you brought your own), make it clear. If you have a handkerchief, use that instead of paper napkins when you need to wipe your hands. The less stuff you use, the smaller the impact your night has had.
