Everyone wants to do their bit for the environment, but if you are a frequent business traveler, it’s hard to know where to start. Here are 3 ideas to help you impact the planet even when business takes you on the road or in the air.
1) Do Your Hotel Homework. Many major hotel chains are changing their procedures to protect the planet. Choose a hotel that gives you the option of keeping the same linens for the duration of your stay instead of laundering a fresh set daily. Choose one in walking distance of a decent restaurant–no packaging from the convenience store and your plate and utensils will be re-used.
2) Minimize Miles. To minimize your fossil fuel impact, schedule yourself to drive as little as possible. Even far from home, you may be able to share a car with colleagues when you make a site visit or use public transit. Renting a car at the airport may not be necessary for cities that have shuttle or train service downtown.
3) Practice Going Paperless. Business travel used to require reams of paper, from handouts to conference packets to reports. If you are organizing meetings, encourage attendees to bring up electronic copies of the agenda and presentations on their computer screens rather than printing them out. Take notes on a tablet, laptop or smartphone rather than with a pen and paper. Not only does this save the forests, the waterways, and the landfills, it protects confidential information.
As technology improves, business travel will be increasingly replaced by video conferencing and other tools that allow teams to work together over long distances. Until then, use the tips above to tread as lightly as possible on the planet. Still have questions? Let us know and we’ll help you get the information you need.
